Coastal Charm Revival: Harpswell Home Makeover Part 2

Welcome back to our Harpswell home makeover series! In part one, we shared the stunning interior renovations that transformed this charming coastal cottage. Now, we’re excited to showcase the equally impressive exterior makeover that we had the pleasure of working on.

How it started

The cedar shake siding and multiple decks were in desperate need of a refresh. Cedar shakes are ideal for coastal environments because they can withstand harsh coastal weather conditions like heavy rains, strong winds and high humidity. Additionally, the natural oils in cedar make it resistant to rot, decay and insect infestations. The shakes on this home had done their job for over 40 years and it was time for their retirement.

Decks and Roof deck: Enhancing the View

One of the standout features of this renovation is the complete rebuild of the decks. The new decks not only provide a perfect space for outdoor relaxation and entertainment but also seamlessly blend with the home’s coastal aesthetic. To take full advantage of the breathtaking views of Harpswell Harbor and Stover’s Cove, a roof deck was added. This elevated space offers a panoramic vista, making it an ideal spot for morning coffee or evening sunsets.

Exterior Transformation: Cedar Shakes and Board and Batten

The exterior of the cottage underwent a significant transformation. The old cedar shingles were replaced with new cedar shakes on the original part of the cottage, preserving its historic charm while providing a fresh, updated look. For the newer addition, which dates back to the 1980s, the homeowners opted for board and batten siding. This choice not only differentiates the newer section from the original but also adds a modern touch to the overall design.

Color Palette

The homeowners selected custom colors for the exterior, which were mixed by Sherwin Williams. A sophisticated coastal greige color for the cedar shakes, perfectly complementing the natural surroundings. For the board and batten siding, a medium-toned grey with subtle blue-green hues was chosen, adding a touch of coastal elegance. The white trim ties everything together, creating a cohesive and inviting exterior that stands out in the picturesque Harpswell landscape. Additionally, the doors were painted a deep blue, adding a striking contrast and a touch of boldness to the overall look.

Garage Update

While the garage was not re-sided this year, we ensured it received some much-needed attention. The doors and trim were given a fresh coat of paint, revitalizing its appearance and ensuring it complements the newly renovated exterior of the main house.

Window Upgrades

A handful of the windows were replaced to improve energy efficiency and aesthetics. Notably, the bay window was removed in favor of one large window, significantly enhancing the view and allowing more natural light to flood the interior.
